QUALITY OF LIFE IN BELEN

New Mexico

New Mexico is known as “The land of Enchantment.” A variety of natural, historic and cultural attractions make New Mexico a popular tourist destination.

  • The Rio Grande bisects the state north to south, flowing through the spectacular Rio Grande gorge near Taos to the chili farms near Las Cruces. A major tourist attraction is Carlsbad Caverns National Park where limestone caves dip 1,000 feet beneath the earth’s surface. Those drawn to the outdoors will find thousands of acres of public lands, including the nation’s oldest wilderness area in the Gila Mountains. Hunters will find plenty of game in the forests and fields. Over 3,000 miles of river and streams and 138,000 surface acres of cold and warm water lakes make fishing a popular sport.

  • There are two national parks and ten national monuments in New Mexico. The most popular are Carlsbad Caverns National Park near Carlsbad and White Sands National Monument, just south of Alamogordo. The state has eight national forests, grasslands, and six national wildlife refuges. In addition to the federal facilities, the state operates more than thirty parks and monuments.

  • New Mexico has a variety of social and cultural events. Theater, music and dance are found in abundance. Countless festivals celebrating Native American, Western and ethnic heritages draw people to pueblos and towns statewide. The performing arts scene includes theater companies, opera, ballet, choral groups, and symphony orchestras.

  • In addition to these resident professional groups, the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University provide excellent facilities for guest artists, and touring theatrical and musical performances. Jazz and contemporary music ensembles perform regularly throughout the state.

  • The nation’s third largest state fair, in terms of attendance, is the New Mexico State Fair held in Albuquerque during September. It hosts horse racing, PRCA rodeo, entertainment, livestock shown, a midway, Indian and Spanish villages, arts and crafts.

  • The annual spectacle of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta attracts over 1,000,000 visitors. It is the largest balloon festival in the world! In 2001 the Fiesta had over 750 balloons representing 42 states and 23 counties.
